This problem was confirmed by Sony, on the page of PSN Service Status where they admitted this problem regarding PlayStation servers being down and stated that they are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible in a message, requesting users to be patient and thanking them for the same.
While the company has not released a timeline for the fix, PlayStation Direct was functional during the downtime.

Several players also cried foul through their social media addresses with many complaining about abrupt disruption of the game. Specifically, some users noted that their systems would not load at all while others complained that they could not play games online.

As of 2:By 30 AM PT the primary PSN services were fully running again without any significant problems reported. But it should be pointed out that the nature of the outage’s cause has not been established as yet, and Sony has not released any statement outside of the status page regarding play station network down.
