Expectations from the return of Aaron Rodgers to the delights of the NFL Monday night were a little high, and the result was somewhat disappointing.
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: The 49ers outclassed the New York Jets when they registered a comfortable 32-19 victory at Levi Stadium. Without their staple player, star running back Christian McCaffrey, out with a calf injury, the 49ers played exceptionally well.
Using this formula to find the ten highest-scoring players of the week, San Francisco’s Jake Moody stood out with six field goals and three deep kicks in the first half. In the third quarter, Deebo Samuel Sr. scored a 2-yard touchdown run, and Jordan Mason scored on a 5-yard play, which added to the lead of the 49ers.
Rodgers, who missed most of last season due to an Achilles injury, threw his first TD pass in 600-plus days to another former teammate, Allen Lazard.
But that was not good enough, as the 49er’s defense stood tall. Brock Purdy had 231 passing yards for the 49ers, and Mason had 147 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Jauan Jennings added 64 receptions for yards, and Brandon Aiyuk missed a touchdown pass before the half that made ESPN’s Peyton Manning angry.
While the Jets Breece Hall scored in the first half, Rodgers contributed only 167 passing yards and threw an interception hence no spark for a comeback.
Lazard managed only 89 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the game, but the 49ers were just too good. When the Jets quit playing, Rodgers was benched in the closing moments of the game in favor of the backup Taylor.
The win and the New York Jets vs 49ers match player stats showed that the 49ers were on form during the early part of the season, while the Jets have a long way to go.
